The RN Irwin Stakes field is usually made up of primarily local sprinters with only a few interstate raiders travelling over for the autumn features in Adelaide each year.

A number of Victorian horses have recently run in the RN Irwin Stakes coming via the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate over the same distance (1100m) at Caulfield Racecourse two weeks before on Blue Diamond Stakes Day.

Held a fortnight before one of South Australia’s premier races the RN Irwin Stakes makes a nice lead-up for the $400,000 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) – currently registered as the Sportingbet Classic, which is open to fillies and mares only.

Many RN Irwin Stakes runners will also be eyeing the $500,000 Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) held at Morphettville in early May, using the Group 3 DC McKay Stakes (1100m) in between.

In 2012 the Mark Kavanagh-trained We’re Gonna Rock took out the RN Irwin Stakes before running a brave second to the world’s fastest mare Black Caviar in The Goodwood two starts later.

Punters that keep an early eye on the RN Irwin Stakes top performers can get a good betting guide for both the Robert Sangster and The Goodwood.

RN Irwin Stakes History

First run in 1955 over six furlongs (1200m) the RN Irwin Stakes began as a Principal Race.

The even has undergone a number of distance changes having been held over 1100m from 1975 – 1979, an increased 1450m from 1980 – 81 which was also when it was elevated to a Group 2 race, back to 1200m from 1982 – 1985, then 1100m from 1986 – 1998.

In 1999 and 2000 it was again run over a longer middle sprint distance of 1450m and then the next two years it was run over its shortest track yet, 1000m. From 2003 onwards the RN Irwin Stakes has consistently been held over 1100m.

After running as a Group 2 feature for a decade, in 1991 the RN Irwin Stakes was downgraded to its current Group 3 status.
